About Big Brothers Big Sisters of Wood Buffalo
Every young person connected
Every community strengthened
Our mission is to ignite the power of young people in Wood Buffalo through mentorship. We support 6–18‑year‑olds to develop and express themselves with confidence, cultivate strong, trust-based relationships that enhance community
and unlock potential, and prioritize inclusive, culturally informed programs and relationships grounded in respect, safety, and belonging.
Since 1979, Big Brothers Big Sisters has been a cornerstone of Wood Buffalo, serving Fort McMurray, Fort Chipewyan, Anzac, Conklin, and Janvier. What began as a service to match Bigs and Littles grew with the community into a wide
range of free mentorship programs: Community‑Based One‑on‑One Mentoring (Bigs/Littles), Corporate Mentoring, Crafty Kids, Full Circle Mentoring, Game On!, Go Girls!, Ignite!, PRISM, and Teen Mentoring.
Mentorship profoundly supports a young person’s emotional, social, and physical well‑being; when our young people thrive, the whole community benefits, with every dollar invested returning twenty dollars to the region.
- Mentored youth are twice more likely to feel happy, healthy, and confident.
- Mentored youth are 20% more likely to attend college, and earn 15% more across their careers
- 94% of mentored youth have an enhanced sense of self-identity and self-worth, and feel more optimistic.
As a registered charity and proud member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada and Big Brothers Big Sisters International, we are committed to leading the way in the mentorship movement across Canada.
